Falling for Falls Part 2: Touring the Kenai Fjords

Today was a day well spent with my boo’s family touring the Kenai Fjords in Seward, AK. We saw jellyfish, sea lions, puffins (& many other birds), sea otters (my fave), and just a peek at some whales. I’m pretty wiped from the adventure, so today’s post will be short but sweet.

I love capturing precious moments like today’s, but, because I’m a firm believer in being present and actually living your experiences, I didn’t go crazy trying to photograph these sea cuties. I enjoyed the time with visiting family and breathed in all the fresh sea air my lungs would allow. Here are a few of the images I did capture on the trip.

Summer Polish

Babe Warning: There is only one month of summer left! Appropriately, Lana Del Rey’s Summertime Sadness is playing as I write this. So, let’s kick it into overdrive and squeeze all we can out of this season. Starting with our nails!

I am by no means saying you can’t wear these shades through the rest of the year. Personally, I get excited to wear more vibrant, colorful polish when its hot & sunny out, so I tend to lean toward these colors in the summer.

Here are my summer polish picks:

01. Essie Clambake | 02. L’Oreal Royally Reinvented 107 | 03. Revlon Make Mine Mango 920 | 04. Old Navy Merry Perry similar here | 05. L’Oréal New Money 108

What’s your favorite summer polish?

Pretty Pineapples: Celebrating Hawaii’s Statehood

55 years ago today, the stunning islands of Hawaii became this nation’s 50th state. I have nothing but fond memories of my time spent in Hawaii. Even these embarrassing photos of a 12-year-old me, thinking I was 2 kewl 4 skool are precious memories of a simpler, tanner time.

Of all my Honolulu happiness, visiting the Dole Plantation was the pinnacle. I had never given pineapples too much thought at that time in my babyhood, so seeing the golden sweetness sprouting up out of the earth was quite a sight. When I think of Hawaii, the image my mind first goes to is the precious little babe head of my sister, Ashley, popping out of the anamorphic pineapple cutout at Dole.

So to honor the charming state of Hawaii, I give you a collection of pineapple adorned wallpapers for your computer & mobile devices. [Click the images to open the full-sized wallpaper]

Words of Wisdom

Daphne Rose Kingma

“How easily we can forget how precious life is! So long as we can remember, we’ve just been here, being alive. Unlike other things for which we have a good comparison–black to white, day to night, good to bad–we are so immersed in life that we can see it only in the context of itself. We don’t see life as compared to anything, to not-being, for example, to never having been born. Life just is. But life itself is a gift. It’s a compliment just being born: to feel, breathe, think, play, dance, sing, work, make love, for this particular lifetime. Today, let’s give thanks for life. For life itself. For simply being born!”

Weekly Dinner Menu 08.18.14

Image of weekly menu graphic

Happy Monday Babes! I’m starting to feel like less of a sicko & more like a human everyday. I think this week’s menu should help bring up my mood as well.

Here’s what I’ve got cooking.

Monday– Bean Nachos

My boo is handling this dinner, which he aptly named “Nach-yo-promblem”. He’ll top tortilla chips with a kidney bean ragu, seasoned with oregano, cumin, & chili powder. Then sprinkle the chips with shredded cheddar and broil until melted. He’ll serve the ‘chos with sour cream.

Tuesday– Cobb Wedge

I received the september issue of Food Network Magazine last week & after thumbing through it, decided I had to make Geoffrey Zakarian’s Grilled Cobb Wedge

Wednesday– Brisket w/ roasted veg

I’ve been craving a savory roast all weekend, so I’ll be slow cooking my momma’s brisket. I’ll season a medium-sized beef brisket with salt & pepper, then place the meat fat side up into the slow cooker. Next, I’ll pour a 14oz can of crushed tomatoes over top, adding up to one 14oz can of tomato sauce as needed. Then, I’ll sprinkle one packet of Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix over the meat, cover, and cook on low for 6 hours. When finished cooking, allow the meat to rest on a board or platter before slicing & serving with roasted potatoes, carrots, & onions.

Thursday– Chicken Piccata w/ pasta & broccoli

The rich sauce of this Chicken Picacta is perfect over your favorite noodle. Angel Hair is a prime choice, but use whatever you’ve got!

Friday– Brisket Sandwiches w/ fries

I’ll take wednesday’s leftover brisket & make sandwiches with horseradish spread & spinach.

Saturday– Eat Out

Sunday– Buffalo Chicken Pizza w/ salad

This pizza recipe is an easy Sunday night dinner to throw together.

Weekly Dessert– Fruit Salad w/ whipped cream

I’ll chop up a peach, plum, pluot, & apple and toss them together. Served with whipped cream, this fruit salad makes a fresh summer dessert.

Harriet the Spy | The Look

One of my absolute favorite movies when I was a little babe was Harriet the Spy. Harriet’s Batman-esqu tool belt coupled with her love of writing in her notebook really resonated with me. To this day, give me an inappropriate amount of accessories & a darling notebook and I am smitten! She got to run around town, alone, being a total creeper; what a life. I was definitely into the whole spy fad. I may have even had a not-at-all embarrassing “Spy Kit” that included a pen with a tape recorder inside. And I can’t even tell you how many squiggly ‘y’s I drew in my notebook.I am a spy

A fun theory I like to think, is that Harriet M. Welsch is the young Georgina Sparks (Gossip Girl). A little girl enthralled with documenting other people’s activity grows up to be a twisted woman obsessed with sharing the dirty secrets of other people’s lives. Interesting concept huh?

In honor of this beloved film, here are some spy-tastic goodies for you.Harriet the Spy | The Look01. DKNY ‘Abby’ Double Breasted Hooded Trench Coat $110 from Nordstrom | 02. Staples Composition Notebook $1 from Staples | 03. Unisex Classic Pullover Hoodie $50 from American Apparel | 04. Candy Necklace $20 for 36 pack from Amazon | 05. Olivetti Studio 46 Vintage Portable Manual Typewriter $254 from El Granero on Etsy | 06. Vintage Russian Opera Binoculars $44 from NGvintagelove on Etsy | 07. Modern Monogram Compact Mirror $17 from Zazzle | 08. Leather Wrapped Flashlight $40 from Gent Supply Co.

As a bonus to this look, here’s a recipe for a tomato sandwich, Harriet’s favorite.
