Here are a few photos from various celebrations early this month.
My babe Bekah, my boo, & I celebrated early with brunch in downtown Anchorage.
Once in California, I celebrated with my family in Los Angeles.
Finally, I celebrated my BFF Ashley’s birthday in Venice along with some of our friends.
Because I live in Alaska and my family & dear friends live in California, we don’t normally get to spend special occasions together. It was really such a pleasure to celebrate with all the people I love this year. Truly a fabulous start to my new year!
How do you like to spend your birthday?
As you may have noticed, I’ve been absent for a few weeks, because I’ve been on vacation in California! I’ve been here celebrating my birthday, my grandparents anniversary, my dad’s birthday, and my babe of a BFF’s birthday. Needless to say, there’s been loads of cake & sunshine. And really, what more could a gal ask for?
I’ll be heading back to my dear home in The Last Frontier on Tuesday night, so you can expect regular posts again. I’ll be posting photos from my trip (mostly food, but you know how it goes), so keep an eye out for those! I’ll leave you with one cliché LA photo to hold you over until next week.
I’ve got to be honest here, babes. I don’t have many favorites for November. I didn’t try many new products, and the few I did, did not blow me away.
No matter. Here are the golden few that made the list:
O!Mega Lash Volumizing Mascara from Marc Jacobs Beauty
While purchasing a refill of an old favorite foundation at Sephora, I had asked for a sample of a Buxom mascara. When I arrived home and was putting away my purchases, I found I had received a Marc Jacobs mascara sample instead of the Buxom one. Initially, I was upset at the mix up. Now, I’m very over it as the Marc Jacobs mascara is a new favorite. It feels non-existent on my lashes, and gives a nice full look with minimal product.
Down Jacket from H&M
Purchased during H&M’s outerware sale, this coat was a fantastic buy! I wanted a second down jacket with a little more style and glam than my current down jacket that is just solid black with no adornments. I also wanted a longer jacket with a hood, for a warmer option. I found all I wanted in this down jacket. The dark green color is rich and interesting, but still neutral; the gold hardware looks luxe; and the faux fur trimmed hood (which is removable from the hood, as is the hood from the coat) and faux fur lined collar are so soft and snuggly. Overall it’s my perfect winter jacket.
When I was a kid, my parents used to keep a bowl of unshelled walnuts on the bar. Cracking the nuts open, and carefully extracting the goods, was so fun for me! So when I saw a bag of walnuts at the grocery store this past month, I immediately tossed it in the cart. I set out a bowl of unshelled walnuts in my home, and proceeded to eat
nearly the entire bag on my own. It is still as fun to crack open those shells as it was when I was a little babe.
As you may know, this babe likes her tea! My boo and I made the decision to chuck our old kettle for an electric one and what a decision that was! It brings your water to a boil quickly and without that eardrum-crushing whistle. The model we selected has a blue light that turns on when you start the kettle and shuts off, as does the machine, when the water comes to a full boil. This beauty has made making tea more accessible for my boo and I, and I recommend anyone who boils water on the reg look into an electric kettle.
Grace’s Guide by Grace Helbig
Grace’s Guide: The Art of Pretending to Be a Grown-Up is a comedic handbook for Millennials needing a bit of guidance in the real and digital world. I’ve been a fan of Grace Helbig’s YouTube channel for a while now, so when this book launched, I was all over it! Grace’s Guide is as funny and charming as I had hoped it would be. Even if you’ve never seen Grace’s videos, (which you should really check out) you can still enjoy this book.
My trip to Minneapolis, Minnesota
For Thanksgiving this year, my boo and I flew out to Minneapolis, MN to welcome his newborn niece, and to visit with the rest of the family as well. They are all spread out between 3 states, so whenever we can all converge for a visit it’s really lovely. It was also great, for me, to check out a new city and state. Even at the same temperature, Minneapolis felt much colder than Anchorage, so I was happy to get back home to the more mild cold. It’s always so good to spend time with my boo’s family, even if it’s freezing out.
What are some of your November favorites?
As promised, here is a look at my recent visit to California, as seen through my stomach. Enjoy!
I would also like to note that I beat all 4 of my siblings & 2 of their significant others at mini golf. Clearly the highlight of my vacation.
Hey California Babes, where are some of your must-eat locations?
While on a family vacation years ago, one of my sisters (a little babe at the time) had her Gameboy, charger, & games stored in a small bag which she dubbed her “Bag of Technology”. This was ultra adorable because she was like 6 years old, but she created a seriously brilliant packing solution.
This charming family tale brings me to the following list of critical tech:
- respective chargers
Next on the packing list:
- writing utensils
I always carry in my purse a black pen, mechanical pencil, & double-ended black Sharpie (one end is your standard Sharpie tip & the other holds a fine point), so this crew comes along in the carry-on.
Because I’ll be traveling at night:
- eye mask
And because I’ll be arriving in the bright LA morning sunshine:
- wallet (to buy immediate Starbucks)
- oil absorbing sheets
- hand sanitizer
- medicated lip balm
- pain & sleep meds
- lip balm
- hair things
- body butter
- compact mirror
I like to carry-on oil absorbing sheets for my face, a rollerball of perfume, and a travel sized deodorant so I can freshen up when I land. I don’t need my family’s first sight of me to be accompanied by any excess shine or stank. The Altoids come into play there too.
I also carry two different lip balms. I like to use the medicated one on flights to combat the terribly drying plane air and I’m sure my lips are grateful. The other lip balm has a spf & is my everyday choice.
You may have noticed I haven’t included any makeup. I no longer wear makeup when I travel. I find it easier to look fresh when landing if all I have to do is splash some water on my face versus trying to apply a full face of make up with a tiny hand mirror. It also saves space in my carry-on; meaning more room for impulse-buy magazines & chocolate!
Essentials not pictured above but definitely coming along:
- cell phone
- reading glasses
- oversized cashmere sweater for maximum cozy
